Пришло письмо из США:

Dear all,

I am happy to have my letter published in October issue of National Geographic (see attachment), though in a severely cut form - for the full text see below.
American historians agree on a decisive role of the Soviet Union in defeating Hitler (it's hard to argue with facts), but the american mass media keeps presenting the history of WW2 in a way that the liberation of Europe from Nazis began on a D-Day. And most americans sincerely belive that Hitler was defeated by US (as some of them believe that the French revolution happened only because of and as a consequence of the American revolution!). We may call it imperial propaganda. Doesn't it remind us something? Our soviet time history text books without almost mentioning of the Asian front till the August 1945 when Americans nuked the Japanese?

Dear Madam/Sir,

In the last, June 2004, issue of the National Geographic, in an article about the Holocaust "Embedded Memories" I found a remarkable statement that " the D-day invasion turned the tide of war against Hitler". This statement is historically incorrect. The "tide of war against Hitler" was turned in February 1943 at the Battle of Stalingrad. By June 1944 there was no question weather or not Hitler will be defeated. The question was when it will happen, and, which was more important for western partners of the anti-Hitler coalition, how much Europe will fall under the communist control.

The statement like this is a relic of the Cold War when distortion of historical facts was regarded as a norm in a propagandistic war against the other side. With twenty-seven millions of soviet soldiers perished in the war against Hitler it is offensive for every Russian.
