(2021) Lapshinsky V. Jokes and memes: the phenomenon of mutual influence (on the example of the elite university MEPhI)

This report presents the results of research on a collection of anecdotes/jokes, which were presented at the 5th Congress, in combination with memes related to engineering and physical education and the life of an elite university (MEPhI). Of interest are the phenomenon, mechanisms and dynamics of the mutual influence of these carriers of humour, the phenomenon of their mutual transformation and enhancement of the comic effect.

Famous Russian philologists Aleksey and Elena Shmelev have been seriously studying the phenomenon of jokes for almost 25 years. They explore their nature, typology, and their hidden impact. And they predict the death of the genre in the coming years. At the same time, Efim Kurganov, the creator of the genealogy of jokes, believes that “joke is a kind of genre – a tramp who is ready to bump into virtually anywhere, if only there is a roof over your head. The joke does not feed off other genres, but feeds them on its own, refreshing, enriching, bringing variety and depth".

Therefore, he survived and will live. And what will happen in the case of synergistic interaction and an organic combination of jokes and memes? The author of the report offers his hypothesis in this regard.
